National Mosquito Control Awareness Week: Take Back Your Outdoor Space

National Mosquito Control Awareness Week runs from June 22–28, 2025, and it’s the perfect time to think about what’s buzzing around your yard.

At ATCO Pest Control, we’re using this moment to help Bay Area homeowners understand how to reduce mosquito populations and protect their families — all while staying eco-conscious and proactive.

Why Mosquitoes Are More Than Just a Nuisance

Everyone knows mosquitoes are annoying. But some species — like Culex and Aedes — can carry serious diseases such as West Nile virus and Zika.

While most mosquitoes in Northern California are primarily a nuisance, the potential for disease transmission makes prevention a top priority.

The Real Problem Starts with Standing Water

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water. And it doesn’t take much — just a bottlecap’s worth can hatch dozens of larvae!

Common mosquito breeding grounds include:

  • Birdbaths, plant saucers, and pet water bowls
  • Clogged gutters or storm drains
  • Buckets, tarps, and even children’s toys
  • Unused tires or wheelbarrows
  • Untreated swimming pools or fountains

If water is left to sit for more than a few days, it becomes a perfect mosquito nursery.

Simple Steps You Can Take Today

As part of our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach, we recommend the following quick prevention tips:

  • Dump out standing water weekly
  • Clean birdbaths and pet bowls often
  • Keep gutters clear and flowing
  • Use mosquito dunks (Bti) in ornamental ponds or low-drainage areas
  • Make sure window and door screens are intact and snug
